Washington University Campus Connector

Danforth Campus North, St. Louis, MO — 2018

OVERVIEW

Washington University needed a more generous, safe and welcoming experience for students, residents and visitors moving between the Delmar Loop neighborhood and the heart of the main campus. We developed a detailed plan that provided paths for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheeled mobility individuals to seamlessly flow along this busy stretch of greenway. The presence of landscape engages each user throughout the year and illuminated handrails provide continuous light at night.

An existing bike and pedestrian path and bridge was increasingly used by students, residents and visitors to navigate a 50’ elevation change along to access and move through the center of campus. The speed of some cyclists, and the overall volume of users had established unsafe conditions along the shared path, and both separation and speed deterrents were needed to ensure this busy gateway was a welcoming and safe route of travel. We developed a direct path for pedestrians, with a separate, accessible path for wheeled travel, integrating landscape along the campus and neighborhood sides.
