Prismatic Light Pillar
Southeast Federal Center, Washington, DC — 2010
OVERVIEW
A new landscape park was being developed immediately adjacent to the Anacostia River to enable residents and visitors to better view and enjoy the diverse estuary environment in close proximity to the nation’s capital. An art piece was to be part of the development, and we envisioned a vertical form that responded to the sky and water, visible from the city streets and a destination along the water’s edge. As people pass around the sculpted base, their reflections ripple along the more solid surface. Sun light dynamically shifts across the upper surfaces throughout the day, transitioning to a suspended, illuminated prism at night.
