Nordstrom at Broadway and 57th

1776 Broadway, Midtown NYC — 2018

OVERVIEW

Nordstrom planned to connect two abutting buildings to their flagship space in midtown NYC, and the storefront at the corner of 57th and Broadway offered a prominent and highly visible opportunity to highlight select brands and products. Our team was tasked with designing an open, minimal glass enclosure for the three levels, with a feature stair connecting two levels of flexible space and a pacific northwest themed restaurant to be located on the 3rd level. Expansive glass surfaces are subtly activated by people and light passing throughout the day, and a fluid, vertical pattern provides a quiet tapestry of color at night, reflecting and warming the interior spaces.

1776 Broadway presented a highly visible opportunity for Nordstrom to curate changing brands, displays and events within their overall retail experience. We developed a design that maximized the glass sizes at each floor, utilizing slender stainless steel mullions at each of the first three floors, secured with an embedded concealed attachment system and a minimal nosing expression. On the surface of each glass plane is a soft and subtle translucent pattern that changes with the movement of light and view, animated by the passing people, cars and activity of the streets. The first two floors of the building are used for changing brand display, the third floor is a more intimate scale where the restaurant Wolf is located, and the fourth floor provides a more private set of spaces that connect to the main store. For the exterior of this fourth floor space, the existing raked limestone was cleaned and repaired, and the punched window openings were enclosed with a high performance glass. A matte reflective material was detailed on the interior openings, telegraphing light to the interior spaces, and providing select views and connection to the city.

To deliver the 18,000 square feet of added space, we worked closely with REID Architecture on the core and shell, and Callison RTKL on the interior spaces. An interior feature stair connects levels 1 and 2, and the materials and details of the stair, ceilings and perimeter conditions seamlessly integrate with the overall store.
